If You Plan on Subscribing to HDTV Through Your Cable Company


The shift from analog to digital doesn't mean all the programming you've been receiving has been automatically upgraded to HDTV. HDTV programming requires a separate subscription from your provider as well as the following:

  • HD-compatible TV
  • HD-compatible cable box (or TV with built-in digital cable tuner: QAM or CableCARD-ready)


If You Plan on Subscribing to HDTV Through Your Satellite Company


If you have a clear view of the southern sky, you may be able to receive HD programming via satellite. Both of Dish and DirecTV transmit over 100 channels, and if you live in a major city your local broadcasts may be in high definition as well. For HDTV via satellite, you will need the following:

  • HD-compatible TV
  • HD-compatible satellite receiver
  • HD-compatible satellite dish


If You Want to Receive Free Local HDTV Broadcasts


Were you even aware that there were free local HDTV broadcasts? If you have been living under a rock and didn't know this, you will need the following equipment:

  • HD-compatible TV
  • HDTV (ATSC) tuner — separate unit or built into TV
  • Indoor or outdoor UHF or UHF/VHF antenna


Of course, if you're going for shows in HBO, Discovery, ESPN, you will have to subscribe to HD TV programming via your cable or satellite provider.
