maybe you should issue papers or anything that will prove that you're really a new owner. Or ask them what papers do they need to make things work. If this doesn't work out, getting a new cable is a nice idea.
But i think, you have to prove it that you are a new owner, even if you are getting a new cable. Worst that could happen is that they will run after you about the bills!
